Biography

Andrew Humphreys is a journalist and writer with a particular passion for the Middle East and North Africa.

He has written travel books for Lonely Planet, Dorling Kindersley and National Geographic.

He was one of three authors of the Lonely Planet Guide to Central Asia(1996), covering Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, not realizing until his arrival in its capital, Dushanabe, that it was in the middle of the civil war .

He was the editor in chief and co-founder of the Cairo Times, an English-language Egyptian newspaper, in the 1990s, and describes Cairo as his favourite city and second home.

He was International Editorial Consultant for Time Out International for over 6 years.

He was editor and author of several sections of Time Out Guides including Miami, Shanghai, Marrakech and Istanbul, the latter winning the Thomas Cook Best Guidebook Award (2001). He has also written numerous magazine features on Marrakech and other Moroccan destinations for publications including Time Out magazine and Conde Nast Traveller.

He is the Founder and Publisher of Paradise Road, an independent publisher of non-fiction books about London. Up In Smoke: The Failed Dreams of Battersea Power Station was the first title, followed by London Pubcats and Parakeeting of London: An Adventure in Gonzo Ornithology.

He lives in London, England.
