Biography

Andy Quan was born in Vancouver, Canada and lived there until the age of 16, when he won a scholarship to attend the United World College, Pearson College, in Victoria, Australia.

Afterwards he returned to Canada, to take a bachelor’s degree in International Studies at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario

He took time off in between each year to do the Ontario/Ecuador exchange program of Canada World Youth and attend the International People’s College in Elsinore, Denmark in, before travelling to Europe for the first time and then worked at Expo’92 in Seville, Spain.

He did a master’s degree in political science at York University in the UK in the early nineties, focusing on international political economy, lesbian and gay studies, and feminist politics.

His professional career began as the coordinator of the International Lesbian and Gay Association in Brussels, Belgium, travelling extensively, including to Brazil, Japan, Russia and throughout Western and Eastern Europe.

He moved to London at the start of 1997 and worked as the project manager of, a gay men’s education agency in London.

He worked for about 7 years as the International Policy Officer for the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations also working as the project manager for Asia (and for a short time, Eastern Europe/Central Asia) for the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition’s HIV Collaborative Fund project.

He is the author of four books and co-editor of one. He is also a musician. His writing has also appeared in many anthologies and literary journals. His writing is a mix of the fictional, semi-autobiographical, and fully autobiographical, and he writes about gay identity, culture, family, race, childhood, sex, community, dating and more. He says‘ I loved being a published author and I’m very thankful to my publishers and editors. I was certainly never a big-selling author, but my published books allowed me to get my words and thoughts out into the world, perform and present at lively events, and meet interesting people and kindred souls – both fellow authors and engaging readers’.

In the last decade has developed a career as a freelance editor, and recently as a part-time reiki practitioner.

He has lived in Australia since early 1999, obtaining Australian citizenship in 2007, and now lives in Sydney with his husband.
