Biography

Bem Le Hunte was born in Kolkata, India in 1964.She describes herself half Indian, half English and an Australian by choice, having moved to Sydney in 1989.

She grew up in India and England, her secondary school education was at Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith, West London. She then spent a year studying journalism then attended Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, graduating with a BA in Social Anthropology and a Doctorate in English Literature.

She subsequently travelled the world, living in Japan and the United States, where she spent time in Chicago. She then returned to India, living in Delhi and working on short films for the United Nations during the International Decade of Women’s Development.

After moving to Australia she became a lecturer in Sydney University’s Humanities Department. She’s an Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney, where she’s the founding Director of the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation, a transdisciplinary, future-facing degree that teaches creativity across 25 different disciplines.

Bem is the author of four novels, short stories and poems – as well as a writer and thinker on transformative learning, creativity and storytelling. Her novels, The Seduction of Silence and There, Where the Pepper Grows, have become number one bestsellers and been published internationally to critical acclaim. Her novel, Elephants with Headlights was published in March 2020.

Bem lives in Sydney with her husband and three sons.
