Biography

Bob Graham is an Australian writer and illustrator of children’s books, mostly for the very young.

He was born in Sydney, Australia in 1942 and studied drawing and painting. After graduation he went to the UK before returning to Australia to work as an illustrator and designer. He illustrated the booklet accompanying the Australian Broadcasting Commission series radio music programme Sing. He lived in Melbourne during the 1980’s and 90’s employed as an illustrator by publishing house Five Mile Press .

His awards include The Smarties Prize for Children’s Books (2000) for Max, a picture book for under-fives, the Boston Globe-Horn Book award in 2002 for Let’s get a Pup! said Kate. Also in 2002 he received the Kate Greenaway Medal , nominated by British Librarians for the best illustrated children’s book published in the Uk, for Jethro Byrd, Fairy Child.

He was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 2012 for his contribution to children’s illustration. A picture from Greetings from Sandy Beach (1991) was used in a postage stamp commemorating 50 years of the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards.
